Fa Abdul and her Penang-based production house, Big Nose Productions, keeps the concept of powerful storytelling from an eclectic ensemble of established and amateur actors, following a script inspired by the veteran playwright and director, yet nuanced by the experiences and personas of the onstage performers.
This concept has gained a strong and loyal presence for Fa Abdul and her revolving cast members, offering theater enthusiasts a refreshing blend of relatable plots and twists filled with cultural relevance and context.
In 2018, Tales from the Scars opened to sell-out audiences in Penang, and a year later Fa Abdul injected new and provocative stories and new and provocative actors to challenge social norms and cultural status quo before restaging it in Kuala Lumpur where it became a hit.
Cast
Watch seasoned performer Chacko Vadaketh expound on a widower’s agony over posthumous adultery, and empathise with talents from Penang, like Karam Tab and Sharmila Kana, as they bring characters to life that struggle with the impact of decisions most of us make in haste. Tab and Kana were also featured in Fa Abdul’s controversial “Sex in Georgetown City”, later restaged as “Love in Georgetown City”.
Fa Abdul gives a voice to the multigenerational multicultural quandaries of our place and time. Utilising university theater club talents like Sabrina Ameen and Farah Adilla Ismail of IIUM, she addresses realities of parental abandonment, and also parental sacrifice. Fa Abdul gives fair representation to the regular faces of Malaysian theatre, with Short and Sweet Festival favourites like Sudhan Nair, Caroline Yeoh, Farisha Nadia and Lenny Wan addressing unexplored constructs of racism, romance and reawakening.
Fa Abdul also brings back Tilottama Pillai, from her wildly successful 2018 “Tales from Amma’s Kitchen”, who portrays a character forsaken by the emotional quandaries of living in a culture of mandatory conversion.

Fa Abdul is a professional juggler. She juggles between her roles as a columnist, media trainer, playwright, director, producer, mother, a bored human being and a resident agitator of the idiots in our beloved Boleh-land. She keeps herself busy by making her voice heard through her columns in Malaysiakini, The Malaysian Insight and Free Malaysia Today, thereby creating a large following who either hate her guts or can't have enough of her. She obviously has plenty to say about everything.
Winner of the Best Educational Award in the International Science Film Festival (2012) for her involvement in Children TV, Fa has contributed for programmes showcased on Radio Television Malaysia, Radio Television Brunei, HBO Asia and ZDF TV of Germany. She has over thirteen years of experience working in the broadcasting industry and is currently producing her own short films.
A passion that in Malaysian theatre since 2012 bagged her numerous awards in Short and Sweet Festival: the Mercedes Benz Creative Excellence Award (2015), Festival Director's Award (2014), Audience Choice Award (2015, 2016, 2017), Best Overall Production (2015, 2016, 2017), Best Director (2016) and Best Script (2016). In 2016, Fa won the prestigious BOH Cameronian Arts Award for her production "Shakespeare Goes Bollywood" as one of the 'Best Six' productions in the country which she co-wrote with Matthew Koh and co-produced with Dato Faridah Merican.
Well known for her charm, sarcasm and occasional foul mouth, Fa is a complex individual whose ultimate mission in life is to heal the world. But first, she needs a nap.
Big Nose Productions
Big Nose Productions was established in 2013 by Abdul Fazrul Kareem and his sister, Fa Abdul. Unfamiliar with the industry, they learned the trade by asking around and learning first hand by producing low budget shows.
To date, Big Nose has staged 16 productions in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang. Among their best productions are In a Nutty Shell, Tales from the Bedroom, Shakespeare Goes Bollywood, Tales from Amma’s Kitchen, Tales from the Scars and Sex in Georgetown City.

Fa Abdul’s “Tales from The Scars” is very touching, informative and poignant, yet entertaining.
Sabrina Ameen’s part of the daughter from a broken marriage in The Leftover touched me as Adam, my son from my previous marriage probably carries similar scars. I hope that I had done whatever I could for Adam to alleviate the pain.
Also Chacko Vadaketh’s shaven pubes part in The Widower and His Pubic Hair was just absolutely brilliant!
All the performers were just brilliant, simply brilliant!
So I went to get scarred today. Laughter, tears and lotsa reflection on all things life...including the pesky question of mowing the lawn in the 'netherlands'. Loved it!

Brilliantly scripted & passionately performed monologues written & directed by Fa Abdul (a veritable Force of Nature) that focus on very cogent human issues. Fa's courage, intelligence, honesty & love constitute the perfect antidote to all the man-made ills that have turned our beloved homeland into a malignancy called Malaisea.
We were at klpac last night for Fa Abdul's Tales from the Scars. Loved the monologues; emotional, funny, emphatic and universal. Not for over sensitive people though.
