About the Show

A dialogue with literary scripts
Rejuvenating the local creative energy

The script - the book of a play - is not only an instrumental tool of theatre, it carries forth an imaginative space, and the conversational space between the arts and society.

When published, the script gains a life extension, allowing its “story” to be interpreted and discussed many folds. The script serves as a medium for theatrical research and development. Thus, script writing serves as an important narrative foundation and nourishment for raising the theatrical arts.

The output of local Chinese scripts are on the decline however. In the face of global competition, how do we shape our local culture? To thrive in this competitive cultural landscape, encouraging more original literary local works is thus an urgent mission.

About Us - PENTAS PROJECT

“Pentas” (Platform), the plane converted into a stage, is a space for exchange without walls and borders.

The Pentas Project was founded in 2005 as an open collaborative theatre project. It uses a multi-dimensional range of art forms - observing, storming, experimenting, harmonizing - to cultivate boundless artistic exchanges. Within the mobile guerilla that is the Pentas Project, its members cultivate practices in performing arts, image recording, architecture, dance, poetry and various other artistic specialisations. They breathe, think, and create in these practices, freely and compatibly. As the members endlessly deepen their professional expertise, they also often step beyond the “pentas” (platform), eagerly exploring artistic exchanges and collaborations of various forms in the pursuit of achieving new artistic heights and fascinating artistic magic.

MIRRORING AND NOURISHING - GOING TO THE FOREFRONT OF THE ASIAN CREATIVITY SCENE

The Pentas Project launched the “The Staged Reading Platform Project” in early 2020. It aims to introduce scripts with fresh themes and creative structures. The translation and interpretation process will stimulate the theatre practitioners’ creative mindsets and contexts, enlivening the creative climate of local scripts. This project is inspired by a literary script exchange project between Taiwan and Japan (the “Japanese Contemporary Staged Reading Rites”). Through the project, it will allow us to connect with Asia’s scriptwriting network, marching steadfastly towards this creative forefront to exchange and learn, and to showcase our local arts and culture.

The Other Story of Ah-Q

The Japanese playwright, Ken Miyamoto’s work
( In Mandarin with English subtitles )

Staged reading - a traditional preparation for the stage.
Staged reading - also a show where incompleteness meets imagination.
Challenging incomplete stage/costumes/set, imaginatively,
7 actors perform 20 roles - barefaced for the audience.
“The Other Story of Ah-Q” is inspired by Lu Xun’s classical short story collection, “Call to Arms” and is based on “The Story of Ah-Q”.

It all starts with Ah Q, and it all ends with Ah Q. A failed hero - a revolutionary thief; life-saving medicine - a killing knife. Triggering Ah Q’s self-mockery and inferiority, dissecting a feudal decay fighting its dying moments. Bursting the self-proclaimed revolutionary’s passion or apathy, mincing the commoner’s good and evil. Life’s loathings, ridicules, pities, laments, which have always come from a never despairing expectation.

Synopsis

Ken Miyamoto - born during World War II and having spent his youth in Beijing - deconstructed and reconstructed Lu Xun’s beliefs to write “The Other Story of Ah Q” in the late sixties using his expert style of depicting revolutions and social relationships. He gathered many of Lu Xun’s classic characters to dialogue on stage, sharing the space with Lu Xun and the tumultuous times they belonged to. Through these characters of different statuses, the story examined what a social revolution could bring: the dilemmas, the rage, the grief. “To the people, what exactly is a revolution? To the revolution, what exactly are the people?” Must one fail to become a hero? Can medicine save, and yet borrow a knife to kill?
