Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes

Oppy & Professor Communitas is set at a weekend workshop for arts practitioners where the two main characters encounter one another as participant and trainer.

Oppy is a happy-go-lucky young man who is feeling stuck as a freelance actor. The trainer, who breaks all the rules about being nice to people at workshops, is an aging professor who wants to teach people like Oppy a disciplined approach to making great works of art. He is also a compulsive storyteller who helps his students to “makan teori” (eat theory) by bundling it into the real-life stories he tells in class. Suspicious of anything that could make him lose his freedom as an artist and an individual, Oppy resists the older man’s teachings. But along the way, he also begins to wonder if he isn't missing out on something.

Background – New Plays by Leow Puay Tin (2019-2022)

Leow Puay Tin – one of Malaysia's most original playwrights – is writing several new plays between 2019 and 2022. During this period, Five Arts Centre is pleased to support the development of these new works by producing rehearsed readings and performances of the plays at our Kotak TTDI space as well as online.

This process is part of a strategy by the playwright to spend time on performance making with younger actors and directors – to cultivate a less hierarchical and more collaborative approach to performance making, and to find a more sustainable alternative in developing new performance texts.

The first of Puay Tin's new plays, The Carer's Monologue & Chorus, was staged as a rehearsed reading to a full house in November 2019. An earlier draft of the current play Oppy & Professor Communitas was staged as an online reading in July 2020.

Leow Puay Tin / Playwright

Leow Puay Tin is one of Malaysia’s most acclaimed theatre artists, known for her innovative approaches to writing. Her major plays – Three Children, Family, and A Modern Woman Called Ang Tau Mui – have been performed widely across South East Asia, Australia, Germany, Japan, and the USA.

Puay Tin is also known for her unique approach to devising, writing, and curating "tikam-tikam" texts – creating performance texts through writing original pieces or using extracts of text culled from published and oral sources such as transcripts, articles, stories, songs, and more. In performance, the sequence of these texts is determined using chance operations and audience participation – creating unrepeatable experiences of encounter. Puay Tin is also Associate Professor at the Department of Film and Performing Arts, Sunway University.
