Despite having no background or training in journalism, Terry Xu is chief editor, videographer, writer and webmaster of The Online Citizen, one of Singapore&rsquo;s few independent media outlets. With a lean team and a tight budget, it&rsquo;s a struggle to keep the entire enterprise afloat in an environment where mainstream media is government-controlled and the ruling party doesn&rsquo;t look kindly upon dissent. 
 
But with the introduction of anti-&ldquo;fake news&rdquo; legislation that would allow government ministers to become arbiters of truth, the environment in Singapore might become tougher than it&rsquo;s ever been. Film by Calum Stuart.

The Shades of Love is an intimate journey into the loves, lives and losses of sex workers in Singapore during the time of Covid-19. When Covid-19 struck our shores, it had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of sex workers. It was barely noticed even as the world&rsquo;s oldest profession looked like it might not survive a pandemic. Through exclusive and unprecedented access to three sex workers, this film unpacks the realities they face and sheds light on the humanity and dignity of this marginalised group through their own voices.

THE SHADES OF LOVE

Trailer Boys follows the journey of Muhammad Irfan Rafieh, a key member of Abam2 Trailer Singapura, which is a community of heavy vehicle drivers from Singapore. Truck drivers are mostly seen as uneducated and unskilled compared to the rest of society, especially in fast-paced competitive Singapore. This film explores how young truck drivers in Singapore such as Irfan find ways to break stereotypes and improve how society perceives them through their day to day work and their trailer club.

TRAILER BOYS

A film by Jason Soo examining Singapore&#039;s history through the depiction of narrow corridors, a suit and a tie, and a pristine book. In 1987, 22 people were arrested under Singapore&rsquo;s Internal Security Act (ISA). Accused of being involved in a Marxist conspiracy to establish a communist state, many detainees were tortured and then coerced into implicating themselves and their friends on public television. Featuring interviews with ex-detainees and political exiles, the film focuses on the first 30 days of their ordeal. The ex-detainees describe various physical and psychological techniques used by their interrogators. This ignoble history of the ISA is a damning indictment of how detention without trial is not just a special kind of law, but a suspension of law.

Freedom Film Fest kickstarts our anniversary celebrations, presenting two works from our Film Lab. Freedom Film Fest Singapore is excited to host our panelists at this fringe screening of Meniti Senja (The Twilight Years) on Oct 1, highlighting The International Day for Older Persons.

Reflecting the breakdown of traditional family values in modern Malaysian society that marginalizes the elderly, Meniti Senja explores the alarming rise in the elderly being left to fend for themselves in aged care centers- removed from the comfort of homes they knew and children they raised. Recounting the stories of people who were once mothers, fathers, grandparents &ndash; now slowly aging amidst strangers within the walls of a care home in Puchong, this film tells their heart-breaking stories of abuse, exploitation and abandonment. Age eventually catches up with everyone and by 2030, Malaysia&rsquo;s population &gt;65 will increase to 15%. Are we witnessing our own fates in a not too distant future? 
 
From UN website: Over the next three decades, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double, reaching more than 1.5 billion persons in 2050. All regions will see an increase in the size of the older population between 2019 and 2050. The largest increase (312 million) is projected to occur in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, growing from 261 million in 2019 to 573 million in 2050.

Meniti Senja / The Twilight Years by Lily Fu

In a country where possession of cannabis is punishable with death, Siti finds herself pulled into the unfamiliar world of lengthy legal proceeding and prison visits when her 60 year old father is arrested for using medical cannabis to treat his chronic illnesses. In her journey to save her father from the death penalty, Siti finds herself succumbing to fear and anxiety as she navigates through her own personal challenges - all the while fearing that she might never see her father again. All in all, &lsquo;Ayahku, Dr.G&rsquo; is a story about a daughter&rsquo;s quest for her father&rsquo;s justice from a law that puts punishment before public health.
